Indian Masala French Toast:one of the most popular savory Indian breakfasts using eggs, bread, onion, cilantro, milk and Indian spices. Crispy on the outside and soft inside. Perfect for every day or weekend brunches.
What is Masala French Toast & Why You Need It in Your Life?
They are a delightful, savory/salty Indian twist on the traditional French toast.
The eggs are whisked together to a fluffy consistency along with chopped onions, cilantro, spices like turmeric (for color and healing properties), coriander powder, and salt.
Bread slices are dunked on both sides in this mixture and fried till golden brown on both ends.
This recipe is extremely popular in the Eastern and Northern parts of India and is definitely on the menu once or twice a month.
It’s filling, flavorful and comes together in a few minutes and can turn those hungry faces into contended smiley faces in seconds 🙂

How to Make Indian Masala French Toast:
Now, that you have gathered all the ingredients, let’s go ahead and make this delicious recipe:
Make the Savory Egg Batter:
Take a large shallow bowl and whisk eggs, milk, and water together till it’s fluffy and airy.
Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt, and red chili powder (if using) and whisk everything together.
Heat a non-stick pan or skillet, drizzle a tsp of oil, and evenly spread it on the pan.
Now, take a slice of bread and dunk it in this batter, and evenly quote both sides.
Place this dunked slice on the hot pan.
Drizzle 1/2 tsp of oil all around the slice and let this cook on medium-low heat for 1-2 minutes.
Flip the bread to the other side, add 1/2 tsp oil, and let this side cook too.
Once both sides are cooked to a nice brown even crust, transfer to a plate.
Similarly, cook all the bread slices and turn off the heat.
Transfer to a serving dish and enjoy fresh and hot.
Serving Indian French Toast and Some More Pro-Tips:
Once the toasts are ready, I like to add them on individual plates along with our favorite green cilantro chutney, chili sauce, or ketchup.
You can even pair them with your favorite beverage like tea/coffee/lassi and for kids, you can pair them with milkshakes or plain glass of milk.
I do not recommend packing them for lunches or leftovers as they do get soggy after a few minutes and once kept in the fridge they lose the taste.
Also, you can cook these toasts in butter or margarine.
The goldenness and crispness of the toast are dependent on your choice/taste … I like them slightly on the crispier side, so I cook them a tad minute extra.

I came across this recipe in search of an Indian breakfast to try since I’m such a lover of Indian food, but have never had it for breakfast and this simply exceeded my expectations. The combination of fluffy eggs, spices, and crispy bread slices is a combination I never knew I needed in my life! A new household favorite for sure.
We often make French toast on weekends and I love this idea of savory French toast. The spices are so flavorful and this is on the menu this weekend. Thanks for sharing!
My whole family loves this Indian Masala French Toast! This is a wonderful twist on a classic that has warm spices and so hearty. My husband has already requested it again .
I will admit to not being a huge fan of regular French toast as I find it can be quite bland. This recipe does not have that problem! Love the spices and the savory dish. So tasty!
