What is an Indian Bread Roll Recipe?

They are an extremely popular Indian snack made using a mix of potato, bread and a few other ingredients. The dough is then rolled into oblong/round or ball-shaped and fried till golden brown and crispy.

Also, known as ‘Indian Potato Croquettes’. In India, you would hardly come across anyone who would have not grown up eating them, especially in their school cafeteria/canteen.

So how they happen to come on the blog today you ask? …. well, as we go through another marathon of calls with school friends this week, suddenly the canteen food was discussed and everyone uttered the name ‘Bread Roll’ in one go !!

Yup, that’s when I decided YOU have to try the recipe ASAP (if you’ve never had it before) or go make them again if it’s been sometime since you last had them.

After devouring these ‘Crispy Bread Rolls’ maybe 4th or 5th piece, if you suddenly get bogged down by the guilt of all those fried food, worry not, as I do have the Baked Bread Rolls or the more modernized version of Air Fryer Bread Rolls too 😉

Also, the Best Part, they can be made using some very basic ingredients, which you can find below:

Bread Roll Recipe Ingredients:

  • 4 Large Boiled Potatoes – shredded
  • 6 Bread Slices
  • 1 Large Onion – thinly chopped
  • 1 Large Bell Pepper (capsicum) – thinly chopped
  • 4 Tbsp Fresh Cilantro (coriander/dhania) – thinly chopped
  • 1 Tsp Thinly Grated Fresh Ginger
  • 1/2 Cup Water – for softening bread
  • 1 Cup Oil – for frying
  • Oil Spray – for baking or air frying

 Spices

  • 1 Tsp Salt – as per taste
  • 1 Tsp Red Chili Powder – optional
  • 1 Tbsp Coriander Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Dry Mango Powder(amchur) – optional

How to Make Crispy Bread Roll: 

Make the Bread Roll Dough:

  1. Dip each bread slices in water and squeeze to remove excess water. Keep the soaked bread aside.
  2. In a large bowl, add shredded boiled potatoes, chopped onion, bell pepper, cilantro, ginger, and soaked bread.
  3. Add all the spices and sprinkle 3-4 tsp water (from same 1/2 cup).
  4. Mix and form a smooth dough.
  5. Wet your hand and place 1.5 Tbsp bread roll dough in your palm.
  6. Make the desired bread roll shape (round, oblong, balls).
  7. Similarly, make all the bread roll and keep in a plate.

Fried Bread Rolls 

  1. Heat 1 cup oil in a pot or shallow pan.
  2. Add 3-4 raw bread rolls and fry on medium flames until golden brown on both sides (takes about 2 minutes for 3 rolls).
  3. Remove the fried rolls to a kitchen towel to soak excess oil.
  4. Similarly, fry all the bread roll.

 

Fried Crispy Bread Roll

Air Fryer Bread Rolls 

  1. Preheat the air-fryer for 2 minutes (180F)
  2. Place 4-5 bread rolls on the fryer basket and spray oil on each.
  3. Air Fry for 10 minutes (you can check the basket after 5 minutes and turn the bread rolls & also spray some more oil if need be).
  4. After 10 minutes the bread rolls will be golden brown, remove and air-fry the raw rolls similarly.

Baked Bread Rolls 

  1. Preheat the oven at 180F.
  2. Take a baking tray and spray some oil.
  3. Place 7-8 bread rolls (or as many your tray can accommodate).
  4. Spray oil on each roll and place in the oven to bake for 10 minutes (you can check the basket after 5 minutes and turn the bread rolls & also spray some more oil if need be).
  5. After 10 minutes the bread rolls will be golden brown, remove and transfer to a serving plate.

Serving Suggestions:

I like to serve these with fresh cilantro chutney or ketchup or even buttermilk ranch dressing at times. 

Infact the kids love to eat it with ketchup …. tons of ketchup 🙂

They are perfect for parties big or small. picnics or even school lunches. 

Also great with hot tea/coffee.

Storage Instructions:

Freezer:

  1. These rolls can be stored uncooked for about 2 weeks in the freezer. You can freeze them in a baking tray or freezer-safe dish.
  2. Then pack the frozen bread rolls in a ziplock bag. Once ready to use, thaw them overnight in the fridge and fry immediately.

Fridge:

  1. You can store it in the fridge overnight or for 12hrs and then fry asap. If you leave them in the fridge for longer they become soggy and mushy.

Here are some options that you can use along with potatoes in the stuffing:

Notes

Important: I'm using onion, bell pepper and fresh cilantro in roll but you can totally skip these ingredients and use as per your choice.

Boiled Potatoes - you can take any potatoes of choice

Bread Slices - you can take any bread of choice (white, brown, multi-grain, atta bread or even sourdough).
