Spinach Dal with Indian Spices (Indian Lentils with Spinach)
Okay, I have this questions for all those who read this post, growing up how many of us really liked to eat “Dal”(lentil) ???
Not me atleast, I never liked Dal (Lentil) till I was 5-7yrs, maybe because it just looked “BLAH”.
But my mom cooked this dal one day which smelled really good and looked interesting enough to try 🙂
Tools:
Medium Pressure Cooker – You can also use
a crockpot OR Large Pot for the
same.
Ingredients:
Indian Spice Mix:
Method:
Heat the pressure cooker over medium heat, add oil and butter. Add Indian Spice Mix and sauté for ½ min.
Add Onion and sauté for 2min (Till onions are golden in color).
Now add tomato and sauté for 2min.
Reduce the flames to lowest and add Spinach and sauté for another 2min, add both the lentils (Dal) and sauté for 2 more min. (Pic 2)
Now add green chilies and water and pressure cook on high till you hear 3-4 whistles and then switch
off the heat.
Wait for 2-3min for the steam in the pressure cooker to reduce completely and Serve Hot.

- ½ Cup Yellow Lentil (Moong Dal)
- ½ Cup Pigeon Pea (Arhar Dal)
- ½ Cup Onion – Thinly sliced
- ¼ Cup Tomato – Thinly Sliced
- ½ Cup Spinach
- 1 Tbsp Green Chilies - Chopped
- 1 Tbsp Oil (Any non-flavored oil)
- 1 Tsp Clarified Butter (Ghee)
- 1½ Cup Water
Indian Spice Mix:
- 1 Black Cardamom – Crushed
- 2 Cloves
- ¼ Stick Cinnamon
- 1 Tsp Cumin Seed
- ¼ Tsp Asafetida
- Salt – As per taste
Instructions
